Arman (1928–2005) was one of the co-founders of Nouveau Réalisme in 1960, together with Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Daniel Spoerri, and others. Their aim, outlined in a handwritten manifesto, was to create new approaches to reality. It was directed against elitist notions of art and found expression primarily in collages, décollages, and assemblages. Arman’s sculptures and objects in boxes, known as “Accumulations,” feature an array of similar everyday objects which, collectively, take on an individual aesthetic effect.
