Concrete art, graphics and design became the emblem of a modern Switzerland after the Second World War. Influenced by de Stijl, Russian Constructivism and the Bauhaus, the Concretists aimed to transform society through aesthetics, design and architecture - for example through the Ulm School of Design.
Circle! Square! Progress! portrays the Zurich Concretists Max Bill, Camille Graeser, Verena Loewensberg and Richard Paul Lohse and their environment as well as their initiators such as Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Georges Vantongerloo, Theo van Doesburg and Anton Stankowski. Contemporary witnesses such as the artist Peter Fischli and the curator Bice Curiger tell their stories. Connections to the European avant-garde are brought to life, as are the hostilities, scandals and struggles to assert themselves in the midst of the upheavals of the 20th century.
